WOMEN'STEC are the leading providers of non-traditional training for women and are offering a training programme which will prepare young people for the work environment and in particular work in the construction industry. The project has been made possible through funding from the Urban II Programme, an EU Community Initiative administered by the North Belfast Partnership. Sharing Places/Trading Places will provide basic skills training in a chosen trade such as Joinery, Electrics and Plumbing, as well as ICT skills training, Personal Development and Gender Awareness. In preparation for work placements WOMEN'STEC will provide CSR training to enable you to work on site. Childcare and travel will be provided.
Sharing Places/Trading Places aims to address the under representation of females in the construction industry to meet the skills shortages. Some 2,940 new recruits are needed each year over the next four years in the Northern Ireland to meet the demands on key projects such as Belfast 's £1bn waterside regeneration project, Titanic Quarter and the Royal Exchange retail scheme. To meet the challenge of the skills gap recruitment of women is no longer simply a nice thing to do, it has become a necessity. Although EU regulations have improved building sites for all, poor career advice deters women entering the industry and deep-rooted attitudes have to change.
WOMEN'STEC has been working to change attitudes. Established in 1993, WOMEN'STEC provides facilities to enable women's participation in nontraditional training and employment, especially in the Construction Industry. WOMEN'STEC does not aim to replicate existing training programmes; rather it provides introductory and supplementary training for women entering non-traditional industry sectors. Based in North Belfast and operating on a mobile basis, the organisation, since its inception, has delivered through its different training projects accredited skills training to more than 800 women and 500 schoolgirls. WOMEN'STEC runs short ten-week courses (30 hours per course), which are accredited through the NI Open College Network.
