WOMEN'STEC Celebration of Awards Ceremony 2008

22/07/2008

A very successful evening began with a champagne reception to welcome all the hard working students who had completed courses with the WOMEN'STEC.

The crowd was warmed up with comedian Fidelma Carolan to ease them into the evening. Speeches were given by Anne McVicker (Chief Executive, WOMEN'STEC), Bronagh Lawson (Chairperson, Board Member WOMEN'STEC) and Kim McGregor (Project Manager, TRADESWOMEN NI). Lynda Bryans was the special guest speaker and gave a very motivating speech about her own career.

Prizes were awarded to 150 women who had gained qualifications through WOMEN'STEC and a group had travelled from Londonderry for the special event.

The Student of the Year title went to senior citizen Dolly Misra, who studiedcomputers and IT skills, as well as electrical maintenance, was chosen because she had inspired her younger classmates with her "sheer determination and zest for life."

Runner up students of the year were awarded to two inspiring women - Birdie Devlin, from Foyle Springs, for her ability to tackle household jobs normally associated with men. The other runner up was Amy Malone, from Belfast for demonstrating how WOMEN'STEC enabled her to gain the confidence to apply for jobs and also begin driving lessons.
