I was one of the first females going onto the building site as a bricklayer
I had worked as a outdoor pursuits instructor for a number of years, but after a period of illness I wanted to find a new career that would keep me outside, rather than stuck at a desk. This is when I came across WOMEN’STEC who offered a range of sampling sessions and careers advice.
WOMEN’STEC found courses for me at Belfast Metropolitan College, and helped to pay for the course fees. I found my own placement in order to get on the job training, and have now completed my Level 2 and working on my Level 3 in Bricklaying.
I was nervous, but just the the same as anybody else would be starting a new job. But, I was never nervous about being the only woman on site, and I’ve never came across anyone who has an issue with it. I was one of the first females going onto the building site as a bricklayer, and it was no big deal. It’s not as hard as men let on, as a brickie all you need to do it lift a brick”
